Martin was born on the Blood Reserve in 1952 to his parents Joe and Agnes Heavy Head. His life partner is Pam Heavy Head, nee Little Child, who have been married for 52 years and have five daughters, one son and seven grandchildren. Martin attended school at St. Mary’s Blood Indian Residential School, graduated from the U of L, with a BASc in 1983, with a major in Physical Education. Martin and Pam got involved with our ceremonial societiesin 1990 and continue to be involved as grandparents for new members. Martin was employed as a student counselor for all levels of education from Primary school to Post Secondary and at the U of L. He also served as Chief Electoral Officer for the Blood Reserve in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Martin was elected to BloodTribe Council in 1996 and served until 2000, and again elected to Blood Tribe Council in 2016 and 2020. Martin has served as the chair for the Blood Tribe Department of Health in 1998 to 2000 and again from 2018 to 2024. He served as a consultant with Writing On Stone Provincial Park as part of his membership in the Mookaakin Foundation. We worked on the UNESCO World Heritage Site status for twenty years and finally achieved the inscription in 2019.Martin will continue to serve in my capacity as grandfather to the societies and work with the various groups that we consult for on various traditional projects and boards.
