Saahkaakii - Short Woman
Oki niistoako’k Sahkaakii-Delia Twigg, Sahkaakii translates to “Short Woman” this was my late Mother’s childhood name, I was raised by my father Tsaatsii he was from Ni’taiitsskaa. In our journey through traditional life Matsoomahkatayo (Patrick) and I were initiated into iitskinaiksi societies Young Horns, Sorrel Horse and Black horse groups, also, we were gifted and transferred an Ikokaan. After living traditionally and learning accordingly by many Knowledge Keepers, the time came when, we too became Knowledge Keepers. This is our primary role today in Niitsitapii Society life.
Currently I teach in various capacities within the community my philosophical outlook reflects the values, history, and worldview of Niitsitapii (people of this land). Elders’ teachings and ceremonies help us understand and accept cultural responsibility, community leadership, and the role and protocol to preserve traditional knowledge. In my journey I worked for the Kainai Board of Education Administration for 24 years and after which I served for 4 years Member-At-Large representation for the Kainai Board of Education. I am committed to community collaboration as reflected in my involvement in many committees and initiatives.
My RCCC part of my journey started when Dr. Betty Bastien gave me the privilege to work on various projects including the Language Story Project and Classroom Instruction. Dr. Bastien recognized the value in all I learned from a traditional lifestyle. My passions include Traditional Storytelling, Niitsitapi philosophy, as well as learning ceremony and social protocol. I believe traditional teachings connect historical and traditional understanding which should be inclusive in the students’ experience at RCCC and as a result learn about their inherent identity.
Finally, I do have a B.A. in Native American Studies, I am a sessional instructor at RCCC focus on Language and cultural identity, strengthening educational spaces, and guiding future generations with compassion and patience.” – Sahkaakii, Delia Twigg
